I get asked all the time about this topic, and being that my job is technology, I’m sure you know how I feel. If you don’t know, we have an online LIVE stream for sunday services. During the service, we chat with the people watching. You can interact with us on facebook or twitter too. The argument is that we are distracting people from paying attention to church or that people who are “networking” during church aren’t paying attention. Texting, checking Facebook, Twittering, all of this stuff is generally frowned upon in the “church” environment. And I think that is wrong. Let me tell you why.

We are told to “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation” (Mark 16:15 NIV). We can’t ignore technology’s power to let us do that. Many people , like me, are tech junkies, and can do multiple things at a time but still be paying attention. One thing I do is tweet a powerful phrase or verse that the pastor speaking that day said. I am increasing the power of what they said by infinite amounts using twitter or facebook. I can send something the pastor says to my social network all over the world in just a second. To me, that is fulfilling the verse. I find it easier to manage my thoughts that way too. Sometimes there is something awesome that was said, and what a better way for a tech to remember it. No one says anything to someone who takes hand written notes, why can’t we take them on our phones or portable devices?

Another aspect is that I use the YouVersion app on my iPhone for my Bible references. I don’t always carry a bible with me, but I always have my phone. I can reference verses right on the spot with my iPhone. Again, I am doing the same thing that the people with an “actual” bible are doing, just a little different.

I was called when I was 12 years old to do God’s work. Very clearly. I was given a gift from God with technology and electronic knowledge. I knew that God wanted me to innovate, and to reach the world. I am fortunate enough to be in full-time ministry and focus on doing that. I am responsible to reach my world! And you are responsible to reach yours! I must use ANY and ALL resources that I have to do it. Now that we have launched our LIVE stream services, we are literally taking church to ANYONE, ANYWHERE in the world through the power of the internet.

It is my passion to reach the world however I can, and I feel like its time that the church gets with the program. What do you think?
